A Gift

A Gift

“When you really gaze at something, you bring it inside of you.” John O'Donohue

In mid-September, my husband and I took a ride to Crawford, Nebraska, to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Why Crawford, with its booming population of 947 people and the home of Ft. Robinson?

Because it has drive-up diners!

Fun, simple, and different. It was a grand celebration with greasy burgers, fries, onion rings, malts, and twist ice cream cones. Just like when we were teenagers!

The glorious day was topped off with a stunning ride! There is a space between the South Dakota/ Nebraska state line and Chadron, NE, that captures my soul every time we ride through there. I do not have this experience when I am in a cage (aka car), only while on my motorcycle. And because I was riding, I did not take any pictures. I could have pulled over and snapped a few shots, but I knew a photo would not express the profound spiritual experience I felt.

When I need a moment to relax my brain, body, and soul, I summon this image:

Feeling the bike's vibration and wind against my body, the road was lost to me as my mind emptied, and only the here and now existed. The air was filled with the intoxicating clean fragrance of the warm soil, hay, and fall.

An endless sea of green, brown, and golden prairie grasses rippling in the breeze blanketing the rolling countryside captured my gaze. Leafy trees stood like lonely sentinels on the open prairie under a canopy of cornflower blue, gradually deepening into a beautiful azure as it kissed the earth on the horizon. Wisps of mares' tail clouds swished through the sky while hawks rode the thermals or magnificently perched on poles and hay bales. High above, the Sun warmed the land and was witness to this stunning unfolding.

My heart burst with overpowering emotions of gratitude, joy, peace, awe, and exhilaration. Tears spilling down my cheeks were gently dried in the warm winds of the plains. I was one with Divine, and my soul soared around me, above me, and over this astonishing creation by Mother Nature.

In these moments, I can envision what the prairie looked like before it was inhabited. No fences, roads, windmills, or abandoned buildings cluttering the landscape. Only Mother Nature at her finest.
